England lamentable performance tonight against France saw boss Fabio Capello come under fire from the aseembled hacks after the game.

And not just the journalists and fans who booed England off the park.

People from Liverpool - notably Stevie G's fitness coach tweeted and accused the FA of being amaturish in their treatment of Steven Gerrard.

The Liverpool skipper limped off with a yet too be diagnosed injury five minutes from time after Liverpool felt they had an agreement that he would only play an hour.

Capello countered that as he already had Barry and Ferdinand injured he needed Gerrerd to stay on.

"We spoke with Steve Gerrard to play one hour but with Barry's injury we had problem," said the Italian.

"We respect players and if possible we decide with with the club.

"I’m upset what happened to Steve with his injury.

"Barry has an ankle problem and Rio had a tough muscle. In 2/3 days he will be fit to play -

Gerrard needs a scan.

"When you play after so many league/cup games it’s possible to get injured."

On Carroll, Capello said: "I’m happy for him, he played alright. He is one player who will be important to England. He played quickly and his movement was dangerous.

"Franco spoke with Newcastle and we spoke with him at hotel and after warm up and after halftime and he said he was fit to play all the game.

"Our doctor said he was fit and ready to play.

"He played 70 mins very well. We have found a really good player with Carroll he will play in more important games.

"Other players are young and will be better and play the next friendly game they need the international experience and must learn to win back the ball."
