Cahill has medical at Chelsea

Gary Cahill will put pen to a new three and a half year contract this morning.

The centre-back is in Chelsea's Cobham training complex in Surrey, finishing his medical.

The soon-to-be former Bolton Wanderers defender won't be available to play against Sunderland today, however.

Cahill, 26, played hard-ball with Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourley over his personal terms.

Chelsea had wanted to pay Cahill £50k a week. But his advisors wanted a figure closer to double of that.

Compromise, as ever is the name of the game, and Cahill will start his Chelea career with a pay packet closer to £75k a week with significant add-ons depending on team success and England appearances.

Bolton will get £7m and Chelsea get a player who, while not given an assurance of a guarenteed starting place he wanted, a defender who will push John Terry to the limit and may take the captain's place later this season defending on the outcome of Terry race-hate case.
