Four Chelsea players have been fined two weeks wages after drinking and jeering in a hotel full of American tourists grieving the US tragedies.

The club have confirmed that the players - Frank Lampard, Jody Morris, John Terry and Eidur Gudjohnsen - have been handed the maximum punishment after hurling abuse at stunned onlookers just 24 hours after the atrocities in New York and Washington.

A fifth player - former Blues defender Frank Sinclair, who now plays for Leicester - were all seen drinking and vomiting as frantic tourists tried to phone their loved ones back home.

Chelsea's UEFA Cup clash with Bulgarian team Levski Sofia had just been called off as a mark of respect for victims of the attacks when the players went on the five-hour binge.

Antonio Parisini, a manager at Heathrow's Posthouse hotel, said: "They were causing lots of noise and knocking things over in the bar and upsetting everyone.

They were really drunk."

Chelsea have revealed that the fines, which total £130,000, have been donated to the US fund, with all five players having apologised for their behaviour.

Nonetheless, the club have condemned the players' behaviour, with managing director Colin Hutchinson labelling the incident as "totally out of order".

All four players have also been warned about their future conduct with boss Claudio Ranieri telling the Sunday People: "I would like to apologise for them.

They had no decency or respect."

The players have all apologised for their actions with 23-year-old Lampard commenting: "I know we made a huge mistake.

If there were Americans in the hotel who were upset by the way we behaved then we are very, very sorry."

Morris, 22, added: "I feel terrible about this and wish it had never happened," while 20-year-old Terry said: "Our timing was awful, but we never wished to show any disrespect."
