Bayern Munich Chairman Gives Green Light to David Alaba Exit

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has admitted he is not optimistic about the future of defender David Alaba, who is set to be a free agent at the end of the season.

Negotiations with the 28-year-old lasted a few months but Bayern failed to reach an agreement, and club officials have repeatedly confirmed that talks are over, leaving Alaba free to discuss a free transfer away from the Allianz Arena in January.

With the clock winding down, it had been suggested Bayern would have a change of heart and reach out to Alaba to try and avoid him walking away, but Rummenigge has put rumours of that to bed.

"Bayern did everything we could to try and reach an agreement," Rummenigge told Sport1's Doppelpass. "We had a lot of conversations, but we wanted answers from him by the end of October. This didn't happen and I don't know if we'll return to the negotiations.

"What I want to be clear about is that our offer showed exactly how much we value him, but he didn't accept it."

In terms of potential landing spots for the Austrian, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are understood to be in the equation, but most of the rumours about Alaba's exit involve a potential move to Real Madrid.

"I don't know anything about the Real Madrid rumours," Rummenigge added. "He's free to speak to whoever he wants from January 1."

It was then suggested to Rummenigge that Bayern could yet return with a fresh offer, but the club chairman added that Bayern had 'put everything on the table' already, before admitting the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak needs to be considered as well.

Bayern have repeatedly stressed that talks with Alaba are over, which means a free transfer next summer seems like the most likely outcome.

Real are reported to be leading the race for his signature, but Chelsea have previously been described as 'confident' they will be able to convince Alaba to move to Stamford Bridge next summer.
