Antonio Conte's Cost to Chelsea Revealed as Club Spends £90m to Sack Managers During Abramovich Era

Chelsea were forced to pay out £26.6m to sack Antonio Conte and his backroom staff in 2018 - almost one-third of the £90m they've spent on changing managers since Roman Abramovich took charge at Stamford Bridge.

Conte only lasted two years at the club before being replaced by Maurizio Sarri, bowing out on a high after lifting the FA Cup at the end of the 2017/18 season.

But as Chelsea's 2018/19 accounts have revealed, via the BBC, the club were forced to spend £26.6m to remove Conte and his backroom staff 18 months ago.

That change, as well as the others that Chelsea have made since Abramovich took ownership of the club, has seen their total expenditure on compensation for managers reach £90m since 2004.

As Chelsea's accounts show, their wage bill also increased by £41m in 2019, while they also invested £280.6m in their first-team squad - Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Pulisic, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho were all included in the figures.

Although Conte was only replaced as Chelsea's manager 18 months ago, the club decided to make another change in the dugout at Stamford Bridge when Sarri was swapped out for Derby County's Frank Lampard.

Conte and Sarri have since both returned to Serie A, where both managers are currently sitting joint-top of the league table of 45 points - six clear of third-place Lazio - with Inter and Juventus respectively.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have surprised most fans with their start to the season under club legend Lampard and the Blues are still comfortably inside the Champions League qualification spots.

The 41-year-old has also seen his side qualify for the Champions League knockout stage this season - they'll face Bayern Munich in February and March - while they're also in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
